Results of the environmental awareness survey on NATURA 2000 network, ecosystem services & green economy.
In order to assess perceptions, attitudes and current practises of local population of Crete with respect to NATURA 2000 network in Crete, ecosystem services and green economy, an environmental awareness survey was implemented between November 2014 to May 2015, within all 53 NATURA 2000 areas of Crete.
More specifically, questionnaires were distributed to the following stakeholders and target audiences:
- Rural population in Natura 2000 sites (stockbreeders, farmers and hunters).
- Fishermen in Natura 2000 sites.
- Professionals of tourism.
- Public servants of the Region of Crete and local authorities.
- Students of the University of Crete and the Technical University of Crete.
- Architects and engineers.
- School teachers.
- General public in Natura 2000 sites of Crete.
- Tourists / visitors in Natura 2000 sites of Crete.
- Journalists and employees in local media.
Analysis of data indicates that a significant part of local population in Crete recognise the environmental benefits of the Natura 2000 network but seem overall reluctant to acknowledge the economic and social benefits that could come from the network in parallel with its protection.
