A two day event in Ano Asites village for the protected natural areas
LIFE Natura2000Value Crete, in collaboration with the Cultural and Folklore Association of Ano Asites village, organized a two day event (July, 27 and 28, 2018) on the protected natural areas and the ecosystem services they offer.
On Friday 27, the project documentary was shown on the hall of the Cultural and Folklore Association, followed by a presentation on the Natura 2000 network areas and their ecosystem services. A long discussion with many questions and remarks from the audience followed. On the next morning (Saturday 28), in Ai Giannis square, the village children enjoyed the project floor game, before moving to Agios Antonios gorge for the release to the wild of two rehabilitated griffon vultures and two buzzards.
LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete on the ""Feast of the Earth", in Arkalochori
LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete participated in the "Feast of the Earth", which took place in Arkalochori between 30 June and 2 July, 2018. On the afternoon of 30 June, a floor game and a animal mask workshop were held for the children of the region, which were distributed hats and t-shirts of the program. Throughout the Feast, visitors could see part of the project photo exhibition and were provided with the LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete information material.
LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete participated in the "Environmental Festival" of the "Hamogelo" kindergarden
LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete participated in the "Environmental Festival" of the "Hamogelo" nursery-kindergarden, distributing its communication material (brochures, books, posters and t-shirts) from the booth of the Natural History Museum of Crete.
Open event: “Natural Environment and Conservation of Chrysi island”
On the 26th of April, 2018, at the onset of the new tourist season, an open event on the “Natural Environment and Conservation of Chrysi island” took place at the Exhibition of Natural History Museum of Crete - University of Crete (Sofokli Venizelou Av., Iraklion).
The whole Chrysi island (also known as Gaidouronisi) has been designated as a NATURA2000 area, since it hosts a wide range of protected habitat types and flora & fauna species. Thanks to its natural beauty, it is a top destination for the inhabitants and visitors of Crete. Unfortunately, its touristic exploitation is out of control, despite the fact than clear management strategy and practices have been suggested by NHMC.

2nd training seminar for professionals involved in tourism, held at Omalos plateau
The second training seminar for professionals involved in tourism took place in the 31st of March and the 1st of April, 2018 at the Environmental Information Center of Samaria National Park, in Xyloskalo, Omalos Plateau.
The Seminar was organized by the Natural History Museum of Crete (University of Crete) with the support of the Samaria National Park Management Body. It aimed to improve the capacity of tourism professionals (mountain and tour guides, apartment owners etc.) on simplifying the notion of the contribution of biodiversity and ecosystem services to the human well-being and sharing it with tourists and visitors in NATURA 2000 sites in Crete.

Event for the World Mountain Day (December 11) in the exhibition of NHMC
An open event for the celebration of the World Mountain Day took place in Decemer 11, 2017, in the exhibition of the Natural History Museum of Crete (NHMC) and was organized by the project LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete and the Mountaineering Club of Heraklion (MCH).
Open Event for the NATURA 2000 Network and Release of Wildlife in Gonies Pediados (Sunday, November 19, 2017)
Under the framework of the LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete Program, the University Crete-Natural History Museum of Crete (NHMC) in collaboration with the Cultural Association of Gonies Pediados and the Association for the Protection and Welfare of Wildlife, "ANIMA", organized an Open Event for the Protected Areas included in NATURA 2000 Network.

Training seminar for journalists and media employees at the Museum of Typography "Yannis and Eleni Garedaki"
On July 26, 2017, a training seminar for journalists and media workers was held at the Museum of Typography "Yannis and Eleni Garedaki" at Souda Industrial Park, within the framework of the 6th Summer School of Environmental Journalism (July 21-30, 2017, Chania). The seminar on "Environment and Ecosystems" was co-organized by the University of Crete - Natural History Museum of Crete, the Department of Journalism & Mass Communications of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Regional Press Institute.
The aim of the seminar was to inform participants on issues related to the environment (ecosystems, fauna and flora, biodiversity, protected areas of the NATURA 2000 network and their importance to the economic, social and cultural wellbeing of local communities).
Educational seminars for students of the educational institutions of Crete
Three training seminars for the students of the educational institutions of Crete took place between 22 and 24, May, 2017.
The seminars were held at the premises of the Technical University of Crete (May 22), University of Crete (Voutes campus, Heraklion, May 23) and Gallos campus, Rethymno (University of Crete, May 24). The aim of the seminars was to inform students about issues related to the environment (ecosystems, fauna and flora, biodiversity, protected areas of the NATURA 2000 network and their importance to the economic, social and cultural wellbeing of the local communities).
LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete at the Inauguration of the Astrakoi Environmental Center
The Astrakoi Environmental Center, which is housed in the village's old school, was inaugurated on Saturday, September 16, 2017. LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete participated in the event with the presentation "The ecosystem of the Astrakoi gorge and its services to man." The presentation focused on the natural environment of the area, its importance for the local community and the efforts to raise awareness of its ecosystem services in the framework of LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete.
News Release: LIFE Natura2000Value Crete participated in the 1st Pancretan Banana Festival which took place at Arvi, Municipality of Viannos
he three-day Banana Festival tool place in Arvi, Municipality of Viannos on 11-13 of August 2017. Co-organisers were the Region of Crete, the Municipality of Viannos, the Association of banana producers of Crete and the Agricultural Association of vegetable producers of Arvi.
It constitutes the first Pancretan Banana Festival with the aim of establishing this event as a constitution in the area where banana trees are cultivated in a great extent. Through the Festival an effort was made to promote a high-quality product, inform people on the cultivation methods and at the same time, participate in cultural events, photo exhibition, guided tour through banana tree crops, musical events, while during the festivities, visitors were treated various banana delicacies.
The project LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete participated in the Festival with an information kiosk and a presentation dedicated to the ecosystem services coming from wildlife on Friday the 11th of August 2017.

The workshops of the project LIFE Natura2000Value Crete took place in the Municipalities of Platanias, Kissamos and Kandanos-Selinos on the 25th, the 27th and the 28th of July 2017. They are the 16th, 17th and the 18th of a series of 24 workshops which will be held in all of the Municipalities of Crete in the context of the project's actions. The workshops were entitled ''NATURA 2000 sites: Opportunity or obstacle for the development?".
News Release: LIFE Natura2000Value Crete was present at the 7th Food Tasting Festival which was held in Sivas, Municipality of Faistos
The 7th Food Tasting Festival that took place in Sivas village was successfully completed. Hosts of the event were the Cultural Association “Themos Kornaros” and the Network of Mesara Associations. The main thematic sections of the festival were local cuisine, traditional Cretan recipes, and various combinations of tastes, as well as local arts and crafts. Traditional food and delicacies were offered to the visitors.

The workshops of the project LIFE Natura2000Value Crete took place in Ierapetra and Sitia, Municipalities of Ierapetra and Sitia on the 10th and 11th of July 2017 respectively. They constitiute the 14th and the 15th of a series of 24 workshops which will be held in all of the Municipalities of Crete in the context of the project's actions. In the context of the communication strategy of the project "LIFE Natura2000Value Crete", the University of Crete - Natural History Museum of Crete (NHMC), in collaboration with the Municipality of Siteia organised a workshop entitled: "NATURA 2000 Sites: Chance or obstacle for the development?". The workshop took place on Tuesday, the 11th of July 2017, at the City Hall of Siteia at 18.30 p.m.
News Release: LIFE Natura2000Value Crete participated in the Cretan Diet Festival, 1-2 July 2017
The Administrative Region of Crete-Regional Unit of Rethymno and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Rethymno co-organised the 5th Cretan Diet Festival with the aim to support and promote the products of the Cretan land and the culture of its people. The festival took place in the Municipal Botanic Garden of Rethymno on 1-7 July 2017. A representative of the project ''LIFE Natura2000Value Crete'' was present at the location of the festival, on the 1st and the 2nd of July (Saturday & Sunday), along with an information kiosk and distributed printed material to the public.

The workshop of the project LIFE Natura2000Value Crete took place in Heraklion, Municipality of Heraklion on the 24th of June 2017 and it is the 13th of a series of 24 workshops which will be held in all of the Municipalities of Crete in the context of the project's actions. Topic covered in the workshop was "NATURA 2000 Sites: Ally or enemy of the social prosperity?" with the aim of informing the public with regards to the NATURA 2000 sites at European, national and local level, the legal framework that governs them and the degree of citizens' compliance with it, the socio-economic benefits provided by nature and wildlife, the funding opportunities in the primary sector, as well as an example of connection between nature and tourism through the promotion of traditional products by tourist enterprises.

News Release: Participation of the project LIFE Natura2000Value Crete in an event organized by the kindergarten of Tavronitis, Municipality of Platanias
An all-day kindergarten in Tavronitis, Municipality of Platanias, organised an event on Wednesday, 7/6/2017, in the framework of the European project Teachers 4 Europe, dedicated to the Natura 2000 (N2K) Network sites. The event was also held on the occasion of the celebration of the World Environment Day (WED) on the 5th of June.
Ms Maria Manadaki, coordinator of the West Crete Law Observatory, informed the attendants on the legal framework under which N2K Network operates. She briefly presented how EU protects the environment through environmental legislation and policy.
