LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete on the ""Feast of the Earth", in Arkalochori
LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete participated in the "Feast of the Earth", which took place in Arkalochori between 30 June and 2 July, 2018. On the afternoon of 30 June, a floor game and a animal mask workshop were held for the children of the region, which were distributed hats and t-shirts of the program. Throughout the Feast, visitors could see part of the project photo exhibition and were provided with the LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete information material.
LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete participated in the "Environmental Festival" of the "Hamogelo" kindergarden
LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete participated in the "Environmental Festival" of the "Hamogelo" nursery-kindergarden, distributing its communication material (brochures, books, posters and t-shirts) from the booth of the Natural History Museum of Crete.
LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete at the Inauguration of the Astrakoi Environmental Center
The Astrakoi Environmental Center, which is housed in the village's old school, was inaugurated on Saturday, September 16, 2017. LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete participated in the event with the presentation "The ecosystem of the Astrakoi gorge and its services to man." The presentation focused on the natural environment of the area, its importance for the local community and the efforts to raise awareness of its ecosystem services in the framework of LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete.
News Release: LIFE Natura2000Value Crete participated in the 1st Pancretan Banana Festival which took place at Arvi, Municipality of Viannos
he three-day Banana Festival tool place in Arvi, Municipality of Viannos on 11-13 of August 2017. Co-organisers were the Region of Crete, the Municipality of Viannos, the Association of banana producers of Crete and the Agricultural Association of vegetable producers of Arvi.
It constitutes the first Pancretan Banana Festival with the aim of establishing this event as a constitution in the area where banana trees are cultivated in a great extent. Through the Festival an effort was made to promote a high-quality product, inform people on the cultivation methods and at the same time, participate in cultural events, photo exhibition, guided tour through banana tree crops, musical events, while during the festivities, visitors were treated various banana delicacies.
The project LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete participated in the Festival with an information kiosk and a presentation dedicated to the ecosystem services coming from wildlife on Friday the 11th of August 2017.
News Release: LIFE Natura2000Value Crete was present at the 7th Food Tasting Festival which was held in Sivas, Municipality of Faistos
The 7th Food Tasting Festival that took place in Sivas village was successfully completed. Hosts of the event were the Cultural Association “Themos Kornaros” and the Network of Mesara Associations. The main thematic sections of the festival were local cuisine, traditional Cretan recipes, and various combinations of tastes, as well as local arts and crafts. Traditional food and delicacies were offered to the visitors.

The Administrative Region of Crete-Regional Unit of Rethymno and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Rethymno co-organised the 5th Cretan Diet Festival with the aim to support and promote the products of the Cretan land and the culture of its people. The festival took place in the Municipal Botanic Garden of Rethymno on 1-7 July 2017. A representative of the project ''LIFE Natura2000Value Crete'' was present at the location of the festival, on the 1st and the 2nd of July (Saturday & Sunday), along with an information kiosk and distributed printed material to the public.
News Release: Participation of the project LIFE Natura2000Value Crete in an event organized by the kindergarten of Tavronitis, Municipality of Platanias
An all-day kindergarten in Tavronitis, Municipality of Platanias, organised an event on Wednesday, 7/6/2017, in the framework of the European project Teachers 4 Europe, dedicated to the Natura 2000 (N2K) Network sites. The event was also held on the occasion of the celebration of the World Environment Day (WED) on the 5th of June.
Ms Maria Manadaki, coordinator of the West Crete Law Observatory, informed the attendants on the legal framework under which N2K Network operates. She briefly presented how EU protects the environment through environmental legislation and policy.
News Release: LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete supported the awareness-raising activities of the Municipality of Heraklion for the World Environment Day
The environmental awareness-raising activities of the Municpality of Heraklion and the Natural History Museum of Crete (NHMC) were completed with great success, on Tuesday the 6th of June. The activities were part of the celebration of the World Environment Day (WED) (5 June).
The Department for the Environment of the Municipality of Heraklion gave out cloth bags in order for people to use them instead of plastic ones, aiming at the application of the European Directive 2015/720 dedicated to the direct decrease of plastic bags consumption.
News Release: LIFE Natura2000Value Crete participated in the ‘’Festival of seeds and self-sufficiency’’ at Pyrgos-Municipality of Faistos, on the 30th of April 2017
The Social Cooperative Corporation “Melitakes”, with the support of the Municipality of Archanes & Asterousia, the Cultural Associations of Doraki, Mournia, Charakas, Paranymfoi, Pretoria, Prinias, Pyrgos, the elementary school and high school of Pyrgos and the parish of Pyrgos, hosted the ‘’Festival of seeds and self-sufficiency’’ at Charakas and Pyrgos, the 29th and 30th of April 2017 respectively. The programme of the festival included presentations, discussion, exchange of seeds, information kiosks, kiosks for the promotion of local products, children’s activities and celebration of the event with traditional Cretan music and delicacies.
The Natural History Museum of Crete (NHMC) participated in the festival on Sunday, the 30th of April 2017 both with information kiosk and presentation. Stavros Xirouchakis, Dr. Biologist-Ornithologist, informed the attendants of the benefits provided by wildlife towards human societies, also noting the contribution of ecotourism and bird-watching tourism. NHMC scientists talked with people attending the festival and distributed leaflets, informative guides and posters of the communication strategy of the project LIFE Natura2000Value Crete, having been implemented by UOC-NHMC since 2014.
News Release: LIFE Natura2000Value Crete participated in a local festival organised by the Cultural Association of Skalani, on Saturday the 8th of April 2017
The project LIFE Natura2000Value Crete, in the context of the Action C.13 ("Public awareness raising activities: Participation in local festivals"), took part in a local festival organized by the Cultural Association of Skalani, entitled: “Legends & truths about Cretan animals & plants”, on Saturday the 8th of April 2017. Scientists from the University of Crete - Natural History Museum of Crete presented the Cretan biodiversity and its special features. After the presentation, the new documentary of the project depicting Natura 2000 (N2K) Network in Crete and the ecosystem services derived from the protected areas was shown. The attendants were provided with printed communication material of the project (posters, leaflets, informative guides on the ecosystem services of agroecosystems-mountainous & coastal areas within N2K Network in Crete, t-shirts). The event was brought to a conclusion with a discussion between the scientists and the participants.
Participation of the project at the cycling race of the Municipality of Heraklion for the celebration of the World Environment Day
LIFE Natura2000Value Crete participated in the cycling race organized by the Municipality of Heraklion in collaboration with the 4th Municipal Community and the Cultural Association of Agios Ioannis. The event was held in the context of the communication actions for the World Environment Day.

5th Festival of Traditional Varieties Seeds Exchange
LIFE Natura2000Value Crete participated in the 5th Festival of Traditional Varieties Seeds Exchange in Pyrgos, Municipality of Archanes - Asterousia, on Sunday the 10th of April 2016. The festival has been organised by the Local Group of the Alternative Community Peliti since 2012, aiming at the promotion of organic farming, alternative agricultural methods, the conservation of traditional seeds, the free exchange of goods and the solidarity among the local communities.
Participation of the project in the 3rd Nikiforeios run
LIFE Natura2000Value Crete participated in the 3rd Nikiforeios run organised by the following: Department of Athletics of the Municipality of Rethymno and Rethymno Health Run with the support of the Regional Unit of Rethymno and the Cultural Associations of the Municipal Unit of Nikiforos Fokas and the Greek Mountaineering Club of Rethymno. The event aimed at motivating the public to paricipate, regardless of age, in athletic activities and at the same time designating, through sports, the historic value and natural beauty of the Municipality of Rethymno.
Knossos Run - Following the Trails of Knossos and Youchtas
Life Natura2000Value Crete participated in the Marathon race “Knossos run” on the 3rd April of 2016. According to the organisers, over 600 people participated in the event. A promotion stand of the project was placed at the central square of Archanes, being the end of the race.
