News Release: LIFE Natura2000Value Crete celebrates the Pan-European Day for the Natura 2000 Network in Axos village, Municipality of Mylopotamos

Event date

Sunday, May 29, 2016 - 10:00

On the occasion of the "Pan-European Day for the Natura 2000 Network" (21st of May), the University of Crete (UoC) - Natural History Museum of Crete (NHMC) organises an open event in order to inform people of the protected areas of NATURA 2000 Network in Crete, on Sunday, the 29th of May, 2016 at 10 p.m. in Axos village, Municipality of Mylopotamos. Co-organisers of the event are ANIMA (Hellenic wildlife care association) and the Cultural Association of Axos – Livada.

The event will include photography exhibition of the NATURA 2000 sites of Crete and other areas, as well as lectures related to the socio-economic value and other benefits that we get from the natural environment. Afterwards, the release of wild raptors (griffon vultures of the species Gyps fulvus), that were found last year in Crete in a bad condition, will follow. NHMC sent the animals to ANIMA for their medical treatment and recovery and is going to release them in their natural environment.

The aforementioned action is being implemented by NHMC, within the context of the project LIFE Natura2000Value Crete ("The ecological services, social benefits and economic value of the Ecosystem Services in Natura 2000 sites in Crete" - LIFE13 INF/GR/000188 – funded by Ministry of Environment and Energy). Cooperators of NHMC are the Decentralized Administration of Crete - Directorate of Coordination and Supervision of Forests and the Hellenic Ornithological Society (HOS).

On the 20th of May, Europe celebrates the "Pan-European Day for the NATURA 2000 Network", while on the 22th of May the "International Day for Biological Diversity" is celebrated. It is a chance for people to consider how they could participate in the protection of our fragile planet, not only with their personal, but also with their collective choices and decisions.

LIFE projects of the European Commission have been responsible for the protection of the environment for about 25 years. They inform, sensitise and shape environmental awareness, respect and protection of nature and natural resources at local, regional and European level.
